Transition Lenses or Polarising Sunglasses?

The summer is over but I was lucky enough to go to 2 trips abroad. The first trip in late July was to Athens and a small Greek island off the coast called Poros. It was great to spend time with the family. As I mentioned in the last newsletter I became quite envious of my wife and daughter in their sunglasses. I used transition lenses which change with the light. These have been great but I thought on my return I will have some polarised prescription sunglasses. For the lenses I used the new HD multifocal lens from Kodak. This is a more individualised lens as extra special measurements of the frame are made to create a lens which gives extra clarity. The frame I chose was the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer

My second trip, in late August was to join up again with the family in Cyprus – and of course I took my new sunglasses with me and I have to say I really enjoyed using them. The HD lens added an extra 3D view even though as many of you know I do have a weakness in one eye. The best way to describe the polarising effect is that it is like removing the hissing noise of an old LP. This was particularly noticeable when driving. All the pot holes were clearly visible and at the beach the reflected light on the water just disappeared. Are there any disadvantages?

Well the main disadvantage was that the mobile phone was not as easy to see. This is because the polarising effect disrupts the mobile phone screens. So, if you are a heavy user of your phone or a kindle on holiday a tinted lens which has great UV absorbing properties is a good alternative. I really like my transition lenses on a daily basis but I would definitely have the polarising sunglasses for driving (even in winter where the sun is very low) and those glorious summer days.
